The burdens of life are so complex that too often I see the clouds and fail to notice the sunshine or the moonbeams. It is midnight and the moon is peeking from behind the clouds as they meander between the moon and me. Despite the cool evening I shed my shoes so that my toes can bury in the sand with each step I take. It helps to remember that I can still feel this world. The fog is thickening and rolling upon itself as it approaches the beach. I turn to walk toward it, meet its blanket of wetness. The fishing pier as well as the beach is void of people with their words and looks of concern and pity. As the fog encloses around me I see a person walking toward me on the pier. I think she too must want solitude so I turn my head away so as not to intrude upon her. She too must have a lot to think about. Before our passing was complete, she spoke to me a simple "hello" and "how are you?" I responded with a "I am fine, thank you. And you?" She said, "I am not so fine. I don't know who I am any more." I said, "I am sorry." She said, "Tell me what you think of politics today." I thought a moment and then summed up a little of what news I managed to keep abreast. As we exchanged our views and opinions, we found ourselves sitting on the edge of the doc, swirling our feet in the high tide. We talked of music, plays, movies, books, hobbies, morals, dancing and children. We spoke of our love lives and our husbands. We laughed and we cried, sometimes laughing and crying simultaneously. It occurred to me that this stranger from the fog was a healing balm for me. I turned to her to thank her for this fine night, but caught my breath as I saw not a stranger but my reflection in the fog.
